Why Your Breathing Matters More Than Your Reps
How breathing affects your fitness more than you think.

Why Breathing Matters More than Your Reps
When you breathe shallow into your chest, your body shifts into stress mode.
Your neck and shoulders take over.
Your core and hips disengage.
Your heart rate spikes faster than it should.
And now you’re trying to squat, hinge, press, or pull from a body that thinks it’s being chased.
That’s not strength.
That’s survival mode.
What We Work On in Private Sessions
In private sessions, one of the first things we work on is learning how to breathe 360 degrees into the ribs, sides, and back.
When you do this correctly:
- Your core actually turns on and braces
- Your spine becomes more stable
- Your hips function better
- Your lifts feel stronger
- You recover faster between sets
- Your anxiety drops
Breathing is your built-in performance tool.
Most people have just never been taught how to use it.
Why This Gets Missed
In a big class or on your own, it’s easy to miss.
No one is watching your ribcage, cueing you to slow down, or adjusting your tempo.
That’s one of the biggest benefits of personal training.
Sometimes the fix isn’t “work harder.”
It’s:
Slow down.
Reset your midline.
Breathe.
Build from there.
What Happens When It’s Fixed
I’ve worked with clients who thought they were out of shape, but really they were just bracing wrong and breathing into their chest.
Once we cleaned that up:
- Their lifts improved
- Their endurance improved
- Their confidence improved
Nothing changed about their effort.
We just changed how their body responded to stress.
It Might Not Be Your Fitness Level
If you’ve ever felt:
- Gassed too quickly
- Tight in your lower back
- Anxious mid-workout
- Like your form falls apart when tired
It might not be your fitness level.
It might be your breathing.
And that’s something we can fix.
If this sounds like something you struggle with, schedule a No Sweat Intro, and let's find the best option to fix your breathing and improve your fitness!
